Podcast Updates

OK everyone, I'm back again to give you a few updates about the Podcast feeds. I'll probably be adding a few new links on the home page to reflect the changes. But real quick here are the main changes in a lovely yet straight forward list.

Video podcast is up and running in iTunes so if you search the iTunes store for Tulsa Church of God you should find that if you are interested.
The audio podcast feed has changed location if you are using iTunes then it should have auto-updated now and you should be good.
Zune users (if there are any still) I'm sorry I had no idea I broke the Zune. I'm going to be trying to get the new feeds submitted soon. However, if you click on the collection option at the top of the Zune software and then click podcasts, on the left side towards the bottom, you should see an option to add a podcast. If you are using any other podcast software you probably haven't gotten the new updates recently because the code I have for auto redirect is only for iTunes. You can now delete the old feed and add one or both of these.

When you get these new feeds you will notice a big jump in the number of available messages especially the audio one. The podcast feeds now contain all the available backlog of messages as well. So if you are interested in older messages keep an eye out as that list grows as I add more and more of our back catalog into the stream.

Official move to Sermon.net

So the trials of Sermon.net went relatively smooth. We only had a few hiccups and that was mostly due with just trying to get users over to the new page on such short notice. So with that we are proceeding to move all of our content to Sermon.net.

Live streaming has been easy enough, I even put an embedded player into the home page for watching the live stream right from there if you want. Sadly not yet compatible on the iDevices, I have been told soon they will have some embedded players that will work without the Adobe Flash. If you want the full player including archives head over to http://sermon.net/tulsachurchofgod or click the Sermon.net button on our home screen or Sabbath Bulletin page.

Getting all the archived content is a much longer process. If you head over to our main Sermon.net page at http://sermon.net/tulsachurchofgod/ you will find that messages available kind of jump around. I was able to upload some audio very quickly and started from 2003 moving forward through 2007, but then decided to do it the reverse and work backwards but the videos take much longer to upload and process and I run out of time in the day to get very many done. Once the archives are more complete you may see some changes to our website to utilize those archives more. We also have the ability to upload the the handouts our speakers may use as well a good example of that that we have uploaded is Art Williams message "Why Did I Do That?", just look for the PDF logo under the video display.

Very quickly I want to run through the status and future status of some of our other outreach mediums:
USTREAM: This is pretty much dead to us. The cost of removing what ads we could was far to costly and then they still stuck "Recommended streams" on the page that promoted concepts that were not in line with our beliefs.

VIMEO: We are going to keep Vimeo around and actually upload the videos to both places. Vimeo has a very nice HTML5 interface and the videos work seamlessly on every device I have tried it on, the cost is low so we figure why not. The direct link to our Vimeo archive is: http://www.vimeo.com/tulsachurchofgod/.

ITUNES: iTunes is still alive and well (with a minor name change if you look closely) and will remain so. Once I can finish up some details with the Sermon.net stuff we also plan to add a video podcast so you can have those downloaded as well or instead of the audio only version.

ZUNE: Hope to update this one as well to reflect the video options.

FACEBOOK and TWITTER: I still think these two services have some potential that I haven't tapped into yet. With the Feast of Tabernacles just around the corner I doubt there will be any big changes on these fronts. I may start looking for volunteers to help with making more use of these services in the future. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts of how to utilize these services for outreach drop me a line at tulsachurchofgod@gmail.com and I will take it into consideration.

Oh one last thing. Sermon.net has and iPhone app. If you have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad you can use that app to access all of our content on Sermon.net as well, including the live stream. Just install the app, go to the search button and look for The Tulsa Church of God and look for the one with Lawrence Gregory's name on it. Click it and then click subscribe and it will add us to the Channels portion of the app. That will keep you up-to-date on all of our content on Sermon.net.

Sermon.net Trial

So we were recently informed of a service that I had not heard of before called Sermon.net. This website is designed specifically for churches that want to be able to make their content available to the internet. This Sabbath, September 17th, we will start running live stream tests and so our normal UStream broadcast will be off. Instead there will be essentially an introduction video playing on loop in case someone has a link directly to the UStream page.

Below is the video that should be playing on the UStream page if everything is working as it should.

For now I just wanted to let everyone know what is going on and later I will make another post expounding on the different features of Sermon.net.

Apologizes to podcast users

I just wanted to take a moment to apologize to the any users who had been downloading our podcasts for it not working the last few weeks. It is back up and running again and hopefully I have learned my lesson when it comes to watching my code :) . Not being a programmer full time I'm still amazed sometimes how a few characters in the wrong location can mess up an entire page.

Again very sorry, but now you have a few new messages to listen to.

Justin.tv trial run- Aug 14th

So as many have noticed the ads on Ustream.tv were getting pretty ridiculous. With the new pre-roll that that they do before you could watch the live stream it was getting very frustrating for many people. Sadly the number of free solutions is very limited and the ones without ads even more so (non-existent that I could find). Today, August 14th, we are trying Justin.TV. While it still has the ads at the bottom we have yet to see a pre-roll so that is already a plus in my opinion.

You may have already noticed that we have embedded the Justin.tv feed into the front page of the website and also switched the Ustream button to a Justin.tv button. If you would like to participate in chat please click the link below the embedded video or the button on the right. You will need to signup for a free Justin.tv account to participate in chat (very sorry for that).

There is a way for each individual to remove the ads if they wish by signing up for a Pro account but I do not suggest that anyone do that at this time. If after some testing we decide to switch services permanently then that will be up to you.

Please email me to let me know which service you prefer or if you know of another service that we can try.

UPDATE: We tried it and it failed miserably. But I don't think it was a problem with Justin.tv at all. I'm pretty sure I have some settings wrong on the system sending the stream out. I will do some more testing through the week and we may give it another try in the coming weeks.

Shocked by the Bible Content

By popular demand we have revised the content and we will be keeping the site around until further notice.

On the site you will find all the audio related to the Shocked by the Bible Event. As well as the flash ad that we ran on our main website during the week leading up to the event.

A link is available on the front page on The Tulsa Church of God website (tulsachurchofgod.net) but can also be reached at tulsachurchofgod.net/shocked.

If you want to download any of the audio content you may right-click and choose Save As.. on any of the links on the page. Or find us in the iTunes store or Zune Marketplace.

Another update/change to online videos

So we have been looking to do something different with our video archive for a little bit now. With our internet connection and recently discovered power issues within our church building we have had issues in the past of problems with the streaming and when the streaming goes down it really disrupts the recording. So we are going to now start using a service called Vimeo for our video archive, as well as UStream.

Ustream will still be used for our live streaming and we will also continue to record with UStream so that there is new content up there available for anyone who may be doing searches within that service. The links in the Online Sermons section of the website will however start changing from UStream to Vimeo. For the first few weeks it will only be new content that is on Vimeo and all existing recording will still be hosted by UStream. But in the near future you will start to see that the archived videos will start switching over as well.

There are several benefits and perks to switching to this new setup:

Content will be in multiple locations most of the time
Vimeo will be less prone to video glitches as the video is recorded locally and then uploaded
Support for a higher quality video
No ads on the recorded content
You can download the videos. (a Vimeo account is required but like UStream its free)
Speaker albums; once we get more messages up there we will be able to link to an album that contains all the messages by that speaker.

Just wanted to let it be know so there was no major confusion when things started changing. If anyone has any requests for any specific messages they would like uploaded please send an email to tulsachurchofgod@gmail.com and we will see what we can do to add that to top of the list.

Easier Access to Video Sermons

Just made some changes to the Online Sermons section. On sermons that have both a video version as well as the standard audio I have added seperate links. This should provide much easier access to all the the available video messages without having to go dig through the USTREAM archives.

Members Only Section in Beta

Just added a link to a Members Only section for the members of The Tulsa Church of God. This section is still under development but you may still request a username and password. Currently the sections available that have content are the Phone Directory as what was published at the beginning of 2009, and the Birthdays and Anniversaries Calendar is up and running.

The Phone Directory listings are the same that are in the January 2009 Phone Directory so there are plenty of changes that we need to get posted and as soon as we can we will get that done.

The Birthday and Anniversaries Calendar still currently only lists First Name and Last Inital. This will get changed over the course of the next few days.

There is also an announcement section where we will post announcements that we do not wish posted on the main announcements page. So this will mostly only include letting people know of address changes or things of a personal nature.

Also in the works is an Order of Services online form. The plan is to setup 1 to 2 online forms that will allow song leaders and speakers coordinate the song service; for example a speaker can choose from a list of topics that apply to their message and that will be submitted to the song leader so they can see a list of songs that may have a similar message. We hope to include a way to see how many times a particualr song has been sung and the last time it was used.

Looking for any interested volunteers for Friday 04-16-2010

Ladies and gentlemen, members of the Tulsa Church of God,

Progress is looking good on the stage and sound system remodel.

We've completed the framing and rebuild of the stage, scheduled to have the carpet applied on Thursday morning.

The sound/video booth is coming along nicely, still a fair amount of work to finish it but we are trying to have it completed by Friday so that all the new connections for the sound and video can be put into place.

With all the construction, we've created a good amount of dust on everything and we need to have the sanctuary, fellowship hall etc, cleaned before services for Sabbath.

If you have some time available on Friday and would like to volunteer to help, we would be glad to see you visit us to help clean and straighten things up!

I don't really have any firm time in mind, but chances are we can use a little help throughout the day. If you are interested in coming by, you can call us here at the church 438-7777 or call me at 640-0631 and I can let you know how things are going and whether we still need help or not.

Or if you just want to have a sneak peak at the new layout, feel free to drop in. But take note, it's still a work in progress and we might just put you to work!!

New Photo Gallery - Sanctuary Remodel

Progress is still taking place on the sanctuary remodel but things are looking positive to be fully ready for this Sabbath. In the meantime we have a few pictures up for everyone to see the progress we have made so far. Head over to the Photo Gallery to see all the pictures.

I just want to point out one specific picture that really fit today. I took the picture below today about 15 minutes after we put the last screw into the new stage decking.

Matt Steel wrote this directly behind the new location for the podium. It summed up the purpose of this whole venture. It wasn't to make waves, or simple change or find a way to spend money, it was to better do what Paul told Timothy he and we must do. We must watch in all things, endure to the end and above all else "make full proof of thy ministry".

The Tulsa Church of God is a very blessed congregation. We have have many speakers knowledgeable in a wide range of topics and skill sets. We have singers, musicians, choirs and a little bit of anything else you can think of. We have people who work relentlessly to bring the congregation spiritual food every week and others who help send that to the world at large.

The attempt is to provide all the necessary tools and room for individuals and groups "make full proof of thy ministry". Whether it be the ministry through sermons, or the ministry of music, or whatever, the goal is to make it easier, enjoyable and fulfilling. I can't think of any reason that an increase in sound and appropriate ministry is a bad thing.

The Facebook page will keep you current on events as well as be a source for people to post relevant information.

Events Calendar now using Google Calendar

Check out the updated Events calendar. By using the Google calendar we hope to keep the calendar more up-to-date as well as allowing you to add it you your own Google Calendar if you use Gmail or any other Google service. It also allows reoccurring events to be setup and with less need for human intervention it means more accuracy and less forgetfulness.

There are some many other useful features such as allowing you to change the way you see the calendar such as switching it from Agenda (default) to Month, or Week. Also an easy print button has been added so you can print the calendar for offline use.

USTREAM is an online service that allows us to stream our services live across the world without having to have a lot of specialized equipment other than a computer with a capture card. Check the Bulletin page for the link to our channel or to view it within our website. By visiting the channel you have the opportunity to chat with other viewers as well as watch previously recorded messages.

Just want to apologize. Yesterday I took down the Pastor's Commentary section of our website. I was working on a few changes and may have gotten a little trigger happy and made a change that was not fully setup yet.
The still have all the content so no loss it is just currently unavailable. Everything should be back into proper working order by this evening.
